Conservation Feature

A Glimpse into the World of Nature Photography with Nilakshi Lohi

How do I view conservation through my lens?

Sir David Attenborough states, “VISUAL IS ALWAYS MORE POWERFUL THAN WORDS.” The availability of information is a significant aspect of conservation, and visual content plays an important role in educating a large number of people on wildlife and their habitats, which is crucial for their conservation.

What led me to take up nature photography?

Personal reasons:
  • I am a homemaker; photography helped me get outdoors, broadening my thought process.
  • Realizing that being outside requires physical fitness, photography inspired me to take care of myself and be physically strong.
  • I get to visit new places, learn from my experiences; it’s an ongoing process. I am eager to learn new things through photography.
  • It helped me see things rather than just looking.
Environmental reasons:
  • Helpful in exposing creatures close to extinction.
  • Capturing the changing ecosystem.
  • Promoting sustainability and conservation.

Ethics I follow on my tours:

I try to capture images without causing harm to the subject or its habitat. I always let trained experts handle the species if required and avoid interfering with nests.

How do I believe nature conservation awareness can be spread to make an impactful response?

By practicing mindful consumption—reducing, reusing, and recycling waste.

Do I aim to showcase critical conservation concerns through my photos in the future?

Definitely!

How do I participate in or think I can be involved in forest protection?

By supporting forest conservation organizations, learning more about forests locally and globally, and sharing my love for forests through my photographs because pictures have the ability to expose issues in a way that doesn’t require any language—it’s a universal language.
